There are so many restaurants and taquerias to treasure in El Fuerte, and "Los Guamuchilitos" is one of our favorites.  Specializing in Carne Asada, their speciality is the "Papa"--grilled potatoes smothered in cheese and grilled beef, then cooked in aluminum foil.  Served with veggies and all kinds of salsa, this is unforgettable!

El Fuerte was founded in 1564, and has a wealth of history and great architecture. Our walking tour of the city will show you the highlights, including this church steeple near the lovely central plaza.

Martha and Jose Luis own this little convenience store, known in Mexico as an "Abarrotes", and it is the center of activity in our neighborhood.  You can even see one of the CCA boats in which we do our float trips down the Fuerte River to the Cerro de la Mascara Petroglyphs.

When the circus comes to town, you just have to check it out!  You never know what will be there, sometimes it focuses on skits and stunts, other times a full-blown trapeze and death-defying feats.  Always fun!

El Fuerte is 451 years old, and is a treasure house of lovely colonial architecture, such as these arches in a local hotel. From the impressive city hall to the humblest of homes, El Fuerte has done a great job of maintaining it's colonial heritage.

Due to train schedules and location, El Fuerte is the hands-down best location to start a trip via the Chepe (Chihuahua al Pacifico) railway into the Copper Canyon. Hoyancos is the stop serving El Fuerte, and the train generally leaves about 830am, moving quickly into the best scenery on the entire route.

Yanni is a true El Fuerte success story, and one that we love to tell.  Starting out working for someone else, she started a very small taco stand 12 years ago, and has been growing ever since--she even has two branches of her restaurant now!

Her secret?  The best tacos de puerco adobada you will ever eat!

Sunday is known here as "Domingo Familiar" (Family Sunday), and it is common for families to go to La Galera, on the Fuerte River, to picnic and relax. This picture shows Martha with two of her grandchildren, Joselyn and Marcos.

Martha uses two different kinds of meat, and about 14 vegetables to make her famous Barbacoa. Since it has to simmer and marinate for about 12 hours, this dish is for special occasions only--making it even more special.

We are fortunate to have a standing invitation to Martha and Jose Luis' house for lunch, and are ever grateful for their love, support and affection.  Lunch this day were Martha's enchiladas and her amazing "Frijoles Charros" (Cowboy beans).  Super rico!  (tasty).
