Day 3: Cerro Gallegos Van to Urique/ Hike to Los Alisos
|
AM: Enjoy the trip to the Cerro Gallegos canyon rim overlook, considered by many to be the most spectacular overlook in the Copper Canyon area, before descending by vehicle to the bottom of the Urique Canyon.
In Urique you can have lunch and meet your trek guides and mule handlers (arrieros) before your vehicle transfer to the trailhead at La Laja. There you will wade across the Urique River, and begin your trek on the Spanish Camino Real (Royal Road) to the ghost town of Los Alisos, about a three-hour hike, with about 1600’ elevation gain.

Today is a steep climbing day, as we leave Los Alisos and climb consistently to Pandito and finally Yesca, our campsite tonight. Along the way are incredible canyon views, so the effort is certainly worth it! Depending on your pace, you will have about 6 hours on the trail today, and the elevation gain is 3115’.

From there we steeply descend over sometimes rough trail to Los Terreros, our campsite tonight. Total elevation change today is 3050’, almost 2500’ of which is downhill.

Day 6: Los Terreros / Cerro Colorado / Batopilas
|
We leave Los Terreros this morning bound for Cerro Colorado, an old riverside town about a 2 hour hike away. From there we follow the San Fernando River before reaching Las Juntas, where we follow old aqueducts along the Batopilas River, arriving our destination after about 6-7 hours on the trail. We drop about 1880’ feet today, much of this in the first three hours of the hike—coincidentally over the most difficult (rocky and slippery) section of the trail.
Once in Batopilas, enjoy the colonial charm of the Hotel Real de Minas, your lodging tonight.
